Ellerston Experience as a Horse Trainer for Polo Games in New South Wales, Australia.

In 2011, I had the unique opportunity to immerse myself in the world of polo as a horse trainer at the prestigious Ellerston polo grounds located in New South Wales, Australia. This experience lasted for an intensive four months, during which I was responsible for the care and training of ten exceptional horses. These horses were not just any equines; they were finely bred athletes, each with their own distinct personality and set of skills tailored for the fast-paced and demanding sport of polo.

The farm itself was a remarkable environment, home to a total of 50 horses, with 40 of them being managed by other skilled trainers and riders who specialized in various aspects of polo. This diverse community of equine professionals created a vibrant atmosphere filled with camaraderie, shared knowledge, and a deep passion for the sport. The presence of so many horses and trainers allowed for a rich exchange of techniques and strategies, enhancing our collective understanding of horse training and care.

Throughout my time at Ellerston, I engaged in a variety of tasks that were crucial for the preparation of the horses for polo matches. My daily routine included grooming, feeding, and exercising the horses, ensuring they were in peak physical condition. Each horse required a tailored training regimen that took into account its individual strengths, weaknesses, and temperament. This personalized approach was essential, as it directly influenced their performance on the field. Moreover, I had the privilege of working alongside experienced trainers who offered invaluable insights into the nuances of training polo ponies. They taught me the importance of building a strong bond between horse and rider, emphasizing trust and communication as key elements in achieving success during matches. I learned to recognize subtle cues from the horses, which informed me about their comfort levels and readiness for training exercises. In addition to the hands-on training, I participated in various polo matches, observing the strategies employed by different teams and how the horses reacted in high-pressure situations. This firsthand experience was instrumental in understanding the dynamics of the game and the critical role that a well-trained horse plays in the overall success of a team.

Photo of myself with Ronnie Quinn, Owner of the horses. He is an Australian polo player who has been aprominent figure at the Ellerston Polo Club. He has a history of competing in high-goal tournaments at Ellerston, which hosts major events like the Kerry Packer Challenge Cup and the Ellerston Spring Trophy.

I also worked closely with Jack Archibald, an accomplished athlete who has recently achieved significant milestones in his career by winning major trophies at Ellerston, particularly the prestigious Spring Trophies in both 2024 and 2025. Jack's success in these competitions is a testament to his dedication and skill in his sport, showcasing not only his individual talent but also the rigorous training and preparation that goes into competing at such a high level. The Spring Trophies, known for attracting top competitors from various regions, serve as a benchmark for excellence in the sporting community. Collaborating with Jack has provided me with invaluable insights into the strategies and mental fortitude required to excel in competitive environments. His experiences during these tournaments, including the challenges he faced and the strategies he employed to overcome them, have greatly enriched my understanding of the sport and inspired me to strive for similar achievements in my own pursuits.

As the final preparations are made, it is important to conduct a thorough check of both the horses and their equipment. This includes ensuring that all straps are fastened correctly, that the horses are calm and ready, and that the riders have all their necessary gear, such as helmets and riding boots. A final assessment of the horses’ demeanor can help identify any last-minute adjustments that may be needed to ensure their comfort and readiness

The scenic backdrop of New South Wales added to the allure of the experience. The lush green fields, rolling hills, and the camaraderie of fellow trainers and riders created a picturesque setting that was both inspiring and motivating. The beauty of the landscape was matched only by the thrill of watching the horses gallop across the field, their athleticism on full display. As my four months at Ellerston came to a close, I reflected on the profound impact this experience had on my understanding of horse training within the context of polo. The skills I developed, the relationships I built, and the lessons I learned will undoubtedly influence my approach to equine care and training for years to come. The Ellerston experience was not merely a job; it was a journey into the heart of polo, where passion for the sport and love for the horses intertwined to create something truly special.

My favorite horse of all time is kind, gentle, has a great personality, and is a strong athlete who is wonderful to ride. At 7 years old, it's the oldest of the group. My time in Scone, the horse capital of Australia, was one of the most rewarding and challenging experiences I've ever had.
