São Miguel, Azores: Portugal’s Hidden Paradise

Updated: Oct 12

In this blog, you’ll discover São Miguel Island, part of the breathtaking Azores archipelago in Portugal.

Many travelers have never even heard of this destination - a true hidden gem in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. I like to call it “Little Costa Rica” because of its pure air, wild ocean, and lush landscapes spread across the nine volcanic islands that make up the Azores. Though technically Europe, it feels like another world - unspoiled, green, and deeply peaceful.

My friend and I spent 12 days exploring three islands - São Miguel, Terceira, and Pico - and it was a trip that completely redefined what “natural beauty” means to us.

When to Visit São Miguel

If you’re planning your own adventure, timing is everything. In my opinion, the best time to visit is between May and October, just before the rainy season sets in. We went in mid-August, when the weather was nearly perfect - gentle breezes in the mornings and evenings, the occasional light shower, and pleasant daytime temperatures.

Just be ready for a bit of weather forcast changes - One minute it’s sunshine, the next it’s mist, then rainbows. So, pack a waterproof jacket and a dry bag - they’ll be lifesavers for hikes, boat rides, or those surprise ocean dips.

Arriving in Paradise

We flew directly from London to Ponta Delgada with Ryanair - under four hours later, we were stepping into paradise.

São Miguel is entirely surrounded by ancient lava formations, so don’t expect the typical golden beaches of mainland Portugal. The entire island is encircled by lava formations, so don't anticipate encountering any beaches. You may come across a beach with black or grey sand in certain secluded spots, but for the most part, the island is about dramatic cliffs, natural pools, and ocean views that take your breath away.

Getting Around the Island

If there’s one tip I could give anyone heading to the Azores, it’s this: rent a car. Public transport is almost nonexistent, taxis are expensive, and buses are limited. Luckily, car rentals are available right at the airport or online ahead of time.

São Miguel is compact - you can reach almost any spot in under an hour - which makes it perfect for road-tripping from one natural wonder to another.

Volcanoes, Lakes, and Hydrangea Roads

One of the absolute highlights of the island is Sete Cidades, the legendary twin-lake volcano crater. We drove up to Lagoa do Canário first, then followed a forest trail to Miradouro da Boca do Inferno, one of the most iconic viewpoints in the Azores. It’s only a ten-minute walk, but every step is filled with lush, almost jungle-like greenery.

When we finally reached the top, the view stopped us in our tracks - two shimmering lakes, one blue and one green, sitting inside a massive volcanic caldera. The Sete Cidades Crater has existed for more than 20,000 years, and it’s easy to see why it’s considered one of Portugal’s Seven Natural Wonders.

Descending into the valley, we passed roads lined with vibrant hydrangeas - blue, violet, and white - decorating the island like a painter’s dream. These flowers bloom everywhere across the Azores, adding a whimsical charm to every drive.

Staying in the Countryside

For our first few nights, we booked a cozy yellow villa with mountain and ocean views - a peaceful retreat surrounded by lush gardens. The rooms were charming, the staff incredibly welcoming, and they even offered late-night takeaway meals when we arrived tired and hungry.

The property, Villa Várzea, was the perfect countryside escape. I recommend staying in the Garden Suite or the Charming Suite - both beautifully designed with every comfort in mind.

Each morning began with birdsongs and yoga in the garden, and that fresh island air made every breath feel like a reset for the soul.

Exploring Terra Nostra Park

No visit to São Miguel is complete without a trip to Terra Nostra Park in Furnas Valley - a lush, 200-year-old botanical garden filled with camellia trees, tropical plants, and steaming thermal pools.

Walking through the park feels like stepping into another century - elegant stone pathways, zoomorphic sculptures, and the faint scent of earth and mineral water. The thermal pool, a deep orange from its iron-rich waters, is the perfect place to unwind after exploring.

Sunsets and Coastal Magic

If you’re a sunset chaser (like me), you’ll love São Miguel. The island’s coastline offers jaw-dropping views where the sky melts into the Atlantic, painting everything in shades of gold and pink. Each evening felt like the universe was putting on a private show just for us.

Final Thoughts

Our days on São Miguel were pure magic - a mix of adventure, calm, and wonder. Between the volcanic landscapes, the friendly locals, and the island’s raw natural beauty, it’s easily one of the most memorable places I’ve ever visited in Europe.

This island isn’t just a destination - it’s an experience. One that reminds you how vibrant and alive our planet truly is. 💚
